En Primeur FAQ

The tower in the vineyards at Chateau Latour

La Tour in the vineyards at Chateau Latour

For those considering a first step into Bordeaux en primeur, we have prepared a brief guide below, but if you need any guidance we are happy to explain any part of the process, please call us +44 (0) 20 8418 2823 or email finewines@coevintners.com

What is en-primeur?
This is best explained as buying wine in advance, at advantageous prices for future drinking. The wines are still in barrels at the chateaux and are sold as futures for delivery in the Spring/Summer of two years after they are first offered  – for example wines from the 2012 vintage will be shipped in 2015.

Why buy en-primeur?
The primary advantage in buying wines early is to secure sought after wines, traditionally this has also meant getting the wines at a good price.

What are the risks?
There is a risk paying in advance for any goods unseen or tasted. You should therefore make sure that you are buying from a company that is financially stable and has an established record in wine and the en primeur market. Coe Vintners is a leading UK wine and spirit merchant with over 80 years’ experience of buying and shipping fine wines.

Pricing
Our en primeur prices are tax free and include shipping to the UK. If you choose to receive your wines duty paid we will invoice you for duty, VAT and any delivery charges due at the respective prevailing rates at the time of shipping.

Receiving the wines
Wines will be shipped from the chateaux in Bordeaux from March 2013. At that point we will contact you for your instructions – you have the choice to take delivery (at which point duty and VAT will be charged at 2013 prevailing rates) or transfer the wines to a storage account under bond. We are happy to explain any part of the process, please call us if you need any help.
