The 2012 en primeur campaign is moving along in fits and starts. It opened with some promise as several high profile Chateaux bit the bullet and offered the sort of bargains we needed to tempt us to dip our toes into the market’s frigid waters. Alas a string of bank holidays has seen offers dry up and recent releases have seen fewer bargains – that is until Pichon Comtesse cut their price by 20% this morning and gave us a wine we can offer at a price (£640 dzn) below other available vintages from the same property currently in the market. There are plenty of Chateaux still to release their wines but we need to see more 20% price drops before most of us will be convinced to strip off and dive right into this campaign – Otherwise we will all have no choice but to invest in 2011 Ports instead.
Generally the vintage is assessed to be a good one, although not reaching the heights of 2009 or 2010. The wines are attractive, supple and approachable – offering mid-term drinking over the next 10-15 years – they will be something nice to drink while the tannic 2010s soften!
Of the other wines offered Chateau Pedesclaux is worth noting, Robert Parker rating it “the finest Pedesclaux I have ever tasted”. Previously this Pauillac Fifth Growth was often arguably the worst wine from a classed growth, thus it would be easy to miss its Parker score of 89-93, potentially ranking it alongside the likes of Palmer, Cos d’Estournel, Pichon Baron and Ducru Beaucaillou which all scored with a range of up to 93. In the last few years property magnate Jacky Lorenzetti has invested heavily in this perennial underperformer, the the price for the 2012 however is just £225 per dzn!!!
