Calcarole Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2006
available from Coe Vintners Fine Wine
A big buy, but worth it. Made only when the conditions are just right. Concentrated raisin-like flavours. Savour slowly.
If you thought you knew Valpolicella you probably haven’t tried it recently. Forget the wishy washy insubstantial red wines offered by supermarkets, this is the real deal. The wines from the Guerreri Rizzardi Estate are perfect examples of how good these wines can be when real care and and passion are combined.
Amarone is only produced in the best vintages and in minute quantities at Rizzardi, using Corvina, Rondinella and Barbera grapes sourced only from their superb stoney Calcarole vineyard above the Villa di Rovereti in the heart of Negrar in the Classico Area. The hand picked grapes are laid on straw racks and dried in purpose built open sided cabins high on the hillside for 3 months, this process concentrates the grape juice, reducing the water content inside the grapes by up to 50%.
The now raisined grapes are fermented in steel vats before maturation in a combination of oak barrels and larger oak vats for 36 months.
The result is a full bodied and profound wine that literally warms the body and soul. It ages well, and can be kept for 10 years plus in good conditions.
At just under £49 per bottle including VAT at the time of writing this certainly isn’t cheap but for a special occasion or a well earned treat this is defintely worth it.
