Cantemerle – The first shall be last and the last will be better than many

Added as an afterthought to the 1855 Medoc classification in 1856, today Cantemerle frequently exceeds the fifth growth status it was awarded at that time. A long-term Coe Vintners favourite, Cantemerle produced one of the best value wines of the 2007 vintage. This is a classic, elegant, perfumed Cru Classé claret that is showing beautifully now and for the mid-term. The more I try it, the more I love it – and the more the wine reveals a potential to age for at least another decade.

The relatively cool growing season in 2007 favoured the Cabernet Sauvignon dominated vineyards of the Left bank and produced excellent wines with delightful freshness, balanced alcohol and lovely pure fruit. For a medium bodied wine the 2007 Cantemerle has a dark colour, deep flavour, fine richness and surprising body.

Looking at Robert Parker’s notes this wine scores higher than the 2007s from the likes of Beychevelle (89/100), Lynch Bages (88/100), Palmer (89/100) which are more than 2, 3 and 4 times the price. Parker’s tasting note and score for the wine follow my own notes below.

Tasting Notes

Chateau Cantemerle, 5th Growth, Haut Médoc, Bordeaux

‘Dark red, practically opaque with purple hints. The nose is nicely developed, with aromas of blackcurrant and other dark fruits. On the palate there is cassis, tobacco and liquorice with a touch of new oak. The tannins are soft and smooth, the wine is medium bodied with a rich texture that is beautifully balanced by a fresh finish.’
David Allen MW

‘A beautiful wine of elegance and intensity, this medium-bodied, dark plum/purple-hued 2007 possesses a floral-infused bouquet, sweet, plush, red and black fruit flavors, and an endearing,  silky texture. Drink it over the next 10-12 years’.   Robert Parker 90/100
