Caiarossa 2005 – A Bird? A Plane? No, a stunning Super Tuscan!

After many years of tasting we’re a cynical and fussy lot and so it takes a seriously good wine to impress all of us – Caiarossa, an eclectic Tuscan blend of 8 grape varieties, managed this with ease and we decided to offer it to our clients without any further discussion!

Pre shipping offer -we will ship this from Italy in early May.

Caiarossa 2005

About Caiarossa
The estate takes its name from the red pebbles found in the vineyards which lie a few miles inland from the coastal town of Cecina. The property was created in 1998 with the first wines produced in 2002. An extraordinary amount of attention has been lavished on the vineyards and buildings, the estate is certified organic and biodynamic, the winery is the only one we know of that has been built on Feng Shui principles! It was purchased in 2004 by Dutch entrepreneur Eric Albada Jelgersma owner of Margaux Cru Classés Châteaux Giscours and du Tertre.

Fermentation occurred in 5000 litre barrels and open wooden vats, the wines being transferred to smaller wooden vats and barrels for 14 months maturation. So as not to overwhelm the wines a maximum 25% new oak was used.

The exact composition of the wine varies significantly from year to year but always retains a warm, intriguingly complex character that aims to reflect its Italian origins.  In 2005 the final blend comprised Merlot (31%), Petit Verdot (20%), Cabernet Franc (17%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (16%) plus small quantities of Sangiovese (9%), Alicante (3%), Syrah (2%) and Mourvedre (2%).

Caiarossa, Tuscany 2005

The wine has a deep red colour and a beguiling complex nose of warm earth, plums, damsons and herbs.

The palate combines bold red fruit flavours with elegance and complexity. It begins with an inviting plummy freshness, opened to a richer damson and then showed complex notes of earth and spices throughout a long finish. The plentiful tannins initially had a supple and rounded nature at first, but gave a surprisingly good grip to the finish.

The wine’s poise is impressive, its plentiful tannins do not make it heavy, it is rich without being alcoholic and its acidity is fresh without being sharp.
